Adding XP printer drivers to a 2008 print server

We’re currently in the process of migrating servers from Server 2003 to Server 2008, which is proving a right old pain for various reasons. This morning’s headache was reinstalling a load of network printers on the new 2008 install that worked perfectly well on the 2003 install. 64-bit 2008, by default, only installs printers with the 64-bit 2008 and (for some printers, it seems, but not others) the 32 and 64-bit Vista/Windows 7 “User Mode” drivers. The old-style 2000/XP/2003 drivers …

Lego Batman 2 (Wii U): COMPLETED!

I actually started this over a year ago, but I don’t seem to have made any mention of it. What happened, was that I played the first three levels in co-op with my daughter, but because it didn’t support the Wii Classic Controller I had to use the Wii Remote which is terrible for this sort of game. I wasn’t enjoying it, so I intended to play something else for a while and come back to it to play solo …

Fillum review: Talladega Nights (2006)

How to comment on this film without mentioning Days of Thunder? Answer: I can’t. In fact, not only is Days of Thunder mentioned in the film, but the entire plot seems to have been borrowed. Sort of. I’ve not actually seen Days of Thunder for years, but there was more than a bit of deja vu watching Talladega Nights. As a comedy, though, Talladega Nights does things for laughs. And thankfully, it is funny. Not amazingly so, but it still …

The 2008 search result wrap-up

Jim did this, so I thought I’d be original and do the same. Sadly, mine aren’t so exciting. The top 10 terms people searched for to find this blog in 2008 are, in most hits first: 01254 277054 drupal register_globals 01254277054 the loyalty awards club 01792 828105 gary wilmott philips freevents drivers philips freevents 01254 fallout 3 addiction It goes to show just how many people are scam targets – those phone numbers, and the Loyalty Awards Club searches are …

SyncMate v1.3 fixes v1.2’s problems

Remember a while back when I posted about how v1.2 of SyncMate was horribly broken? And how I had to revert back to v1.1 while they sorted out the issues with the driver on my Vario II? Well, good news everyone! I thought I’d give the relatively recently released v1.3 a punt. And guess what? It works! Not only that, but they’ve added a few useful new features. For a start, you can now sync your bookmarks with Firefox instead …

Audio problems on a HP Compaq nx6325

I’ve had a HP laptop in several times in the last week, suffering from severe audio stuttering – in Media Player, VLC, when playing DVDs, and even just playing the Windows start-up jingle. It’s almost like when I had a nasty 16-bit ISA soundcard in my ancient PC and tried to play Half-Life. We tried all sorts – scanning for viruses, defragging, reinstalling drivers, reducing the hardware acceleration, adding more memory, changing the volume… everything. But it still kept doing …

Slipstreaming SP2 into Windows Server 2003

And other tales. For the last couple of days, I’ve been struggling to get Server 2003 installed on a new Dell PowerEdge 2950 III server. I didn’t think ¬¨¬£500 for the OS and Dell to install it was value for money, when I had some spare licences lying around. Unfortunately, wishing to save this money was a real headache. First of all, OS-less Dell servers come with… nothing. No software at all (aside from some drivers). When you turn them …

Forza Motorsport 2 (360)

Level 20 GET! All (two!) Korean cars GET! Amazing scenes. Mainly raced myself today, although I did hire a driver for a couple of races. Managed another hardest-settings race too, although it was on the same track as the last one so it wasn’t really that challenging. Braved the auctions again, mostly to get rid of some of the cars I have but don’t need, but won a few too, including a New Super Mario Bros Nissan Fairlady Z. I’m …

Forza Motorsport 2 (360)

I’ve ranked up to Level 17 now, but I’m starting to run out of races to participate in. Some need me to buy a new car (which I tried doing via the auctions, but again they just frustrated me), but most need me to be on level 20. Raced a few more races, mainly by hiring drivers. It’s the game that plays itself! You earn in-game credits for sitting on the toilet. Excellent. I did drive a few myself though, …

Forza Motorsport 2 (360)

It’s about time I went back to this for a bit. Why, then, did I spent a good 45 minutes doing nothing but watch my AI driver play two races for me, then spend ages trying to buy and sell cars? I didn’t actually do any driving. And it’s a bloody driving game. And the auction is broken, as you can’t specify a price you want to bid, making it all rubbish and long-winded when you’re buying. Pah.

Dell 2407WFP and Geforce FX 5600 woes

I took delivery of a new Dell 2407 widescreen monitor today. And very nice it is too. To test it, I plugged it into my MacBook, and within seconds I had a lovely 1920×1200 crystal clear display. Excellent. However, things were not all well when I tried it on my PC. I thought I’d recount the problems here, for the benefit of others who have run into the same problem as me. My PC has a Geforce FX 5600 graphics …

Tinykin (PS5): COMPLETED!

Well, what a lovely surprise this turned out to be! It had been on the periphery of my want list for a while, but I was sceptical that it was just going to be a Pikmin clone like the reviews suggested it was, and Pikmin is fantastic so that’s a hard wall to break through and every likelihood it’d be a bit pants. And, while there’s definitely a Pikminny taste to Tinykin, it’s certainly its own thing. You’re a little …

Was I ready to go Mac only?

Ten whole Earth years ago, on this very blog, I asked myself the question: Am I ready to go Mac only? Today, I finally answer it. Back then, I was certainly ready to try a Mac-only lifestyle. I already owned two, but my main computer was still a PC. I looked at the things I used regularly on it that might cause an issue if I were to move over to the Apple Ecosystem completely, and eventually took the plunge …
